BlackBerry PlayBook Gets Facebook App Before iPad

Score one for RIM: its new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is getting an official Facebook application before Apple's iPad. Announced at this week's BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Florida, the new app is the first tablet-optimized interface for the PlayBook. With Facebook for PlayBook, users will be able to view and add friends, read through their News Feed, view photos and videos and chat with their Facebook friends.

RIM says it already has over 30 million BlackBerry smartphone users who access Facebook on their phones, and the new tablet app will extend Facebook to its new tablet users, too. RIM worked closely with Facebook on the app's development, it said, which is notable, considering that Facebook has pointedly refused to launch an iPad application on Apple's tablet computer. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg once said, when asked about the absence of an official Facebook iPad app, that the iPad was not mobile - it was a computer.

The PlayBook, then, must be "mobile," in Zuckerberg's eyes, at least.

The new app supports the following features:

* View and add Friends -  Users can find friends by scanning the new grid view of their profile pictures; search for and add new friends and manage new friend requests; browse their profiles, photos and videos; view and interact with wall posts; view key information on profiles and pages; and view, comment and ‘like’ photos on profiles and pages.

* Photo and video viewing - Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook makes it easy to upload photos from the BlackBerry PlayBook Picture Library, tag friends in photos, view comments, tags and likes.  The BlackBerry PlayBook can also be connected to an HD TV to display photos and videos at a whole new level in full 1080p HD.

* Connect with friends using Facebook Chat -  On the BlackBerry PlayBook screen, users can enjoy side-by-side viewing of online contacts and active conversations. Notifications of new Chat messages are displayed on the Notifications Bar, so users can quickly and easily read and respond to new Chat messages while browsing friends’ profiles, viewing their pictures or reading their status updates.

* View and interact with the News Feed - Users will be able to browse highlights such as photo uploads and status updates and seamlessly view links in the BlackBerry PlayBook browser.  They will also be able to “Comment” and “Like” to discuss and show appreciation for friends’ content, as well as publish a status update or upload a photo from the status publisher accessible from their Profile or from within the News Feed.

The Facebook app will be available in the BlackBerry App World app store sometime in May, but no exact date was given for its launch.

Facebook and Twitter fuel iPhone and BlackBerry addiction

Ofcom says one in three adults and most teenagers classify themselves as highly addicted to their smartphones such as iPhones, Blackberrys and Androids. Photograph: Daniel Law/PA

Britons' appetite for Facebook and social networks on the go is driving a huge demand for smartphones – with 60% of teenagers describing themselves as "highly addicted" to their device – according to new research by the media regulator, Ofcom.

Almost half of teenagers and more than a quarter of adults now own a smartphone, with most using their iPhone or BlackBerry to browse Facebook and email.

The study, published on Thursday, also shows that smartphones have begun to intrude on our most private moments, with 47% of teenagers admitting to using their device in the toilet. Only 22% of adults confessed to the same habit. Unsurprisingly, mobile-addicted teens are more likely than adults to be distracted by their phones over dinner and in the cinema – and more would answer their phone if it woke them up.

Separate figures shared exclusively with the Guardian show that, for the first time, smartphone sales outstripped sales of regular mobiles in the first half of this year as the enormous demand continues to rise. Just over half of the total 13.6m mobile sales from January to June 2011 were smartphones, according to research by GfK Retail and Technology UK.

Of the new generation of smartphone users, 60% of teenagers classed themselves as "highly addicted" to their device, compared to 37% of adults.

Ofcom surveyed 2,073 adults and 521 children and teenagers in March this year. The regulator defines teenagers as aged between 12 and 15, with adults 16-years-old and above.

"Ofcom's report shows the influence that communications technology now has on our daily lives, and on the way we behave and communicate with each other," said James Thickett, Ofcom's director of research.

"Our research into the use of smartphones, in particular, reveals how quickly people become reliant on new technology – to the point of feeling addicted. As more and more people acquire smartphones, they are becoming an essential tool in peoples' social lives whether they are out with friends socialising or using Facebook on the move."

Facebook remains far and away the most popular website for mobile users, with users spending almost four times the amount of time socialising online than using Google or any other website. Unsurprisingly, multi-tasking teenagers said they were less likely to read books if they owned a smartphone. But they also said that owning a smartphone made them more likely to ditch games consoles like the PS3 and the computer, in favour of their pocket-sized handset.

The huge boost in smartphone sales has led to a 67% increase in mobile data use as phone users watched videos and sent emails on the go. Mobile operators, such as O2 and Vodafone, have been put under huge strain by the new load. But Thickett said the carriers are coping with the enormous demand.

"The research is saying that people are keeping their phones on longer and becoming addicted to them. This isn't a problem now but something we need to be aware of. Operators have responded by upgrading their networks so it is being coped with," Thickett said.

Despite being a nation of mobile addicts, Ofcom found that truisms still apply when it comes to traditional media like TV and radio. Other findings show:

• Britons are spending more time in front of the TV (four hours a day last year, compared to 3.8 hours in 2009). This is partly due to the rise of on-demand viewing, most notably Sky+, and an increase in the number of homes with high-definition TVs. Two newcomers to the HD market, Freeview HD and Freesat HD, have established themselves as more-affordable competitors to Virgin Media and Sky.

• The new generation of broadband, delivered by fibre-optic cables, is now available for 57% of UK households – though just 500,000 have adopted it. Four in five of those with superfast broadband said they were satisfied with the service, compared to 57% satisfaction with their previous broadband.

• Aside from offline gaming, Brits who own games consoles are most likely to use it for watching video content (22%), online gaming (22%), and watching DVDs (19%). Just over one in 10 said they browse the web via their games console, while 9% use it to watch BBC iPlayer.

• Britons sent an average of five text messages a day last year, contributing to a total of 129bn texts sent – up by 24% in 2009.

• Nearly 10m TV sets were sold in 2010, almost all of which were HD ready. The rise of internet-enabled TVs continued, with 1m sales last year, and 3D living room viewing remained a marginal activity, with 125,000 sales of 3D TVs.

However, Ofcom warned that older Britons risked being left behind in the "digital revolution". While 90% of adults aged 35-44 have the internet at home, this falls to just a quarter of over 75s. The survey showed that 51% of over 75s own a mobile phone, compared to 99% of 25-34-year-olds. Ofcom said that, for the first time, more than half of 65- to 74-year-olds have access to the internet at home, while just over three quarters own a mobile phone.
More findings: mobile phones

• 47% of British teenagers and 27% of adults own a smartphone

• Sixty per cent of adults and 37% percent of smartphone owners describe themselves as "highly addicted" to their device

• Nearly half (47%) of teenage smartphone owners admit using their device in the toilet, compared to 22% of adults.
TV

• Brits watched an average of four hours of TV a day last year, up from 3.8 hours in 2009.

• Almost all (93%) of homes had multi-channel TV, with 4% sticking to analogue terrestrial TV.

• Nearly 10m TVs were sold in 2010, almost all of which were HD ready. There were 1m internet-enabled TV sales during 2010, and 125,000 sales of 3D TVs.
Radio

• 91.6% of Brits listened to the radio in the first quarter of 2011 – up from 90.6% in 2010.

• Just over a quarter (26.5%) of radio listening is digital, while analogue accounts for 65% of all listening.

• One in five households (18%) households use the internet to listen to the radio.
Internet

• Around 57% of UK households had access to superfast broadband by the end of June 2011.

• Nearly half (48%) of UK adults said they used social networking sites in first three months of 2011 – up from 40% in 2010.

• On average, internet users spent around 50 hours at their computer in April 2011, equivalent to 1 hours and 40 minutes a day.

Free Download Pixelated Plus Game

The object of the game is to change the colour of the squares until the entire screen is a single solid colour. This is done by using the coloured buttons on the bottom of the screen to change the colour of the square in the upper left hand corner and those surrounding it. Changing this square to the colour of those around it, allows it to slowly grow until it fills the entire screen. The ultimate goal is to clear the screen in as few moves as possible.

The game has two grid sizes for varying the strategy of play. Win/loss percentages are calculated for all difficulty types and grid sizes, as well as all time best scores, and a number of achievements.

Opera Mini 6 Browser Blackberry Freeware Download

The developers of Opera have finally come out with an update to resolve all the problems with old Opera 5 fixing problems with scrolling and missing text. They also made huge improvements in webpage loading time.

They have also made some improvements in the user interface making bookmarking easier. They even improved the overall stability of the browser making it more snappier. Opera Mini has always been a great browser but the old question still comes up on why I still have Opera mini on my phone. The answer is very simple I love using the webkit browser on my Torch but its still not perfect, I often get a low memory error when I view websites with large pictures or graphics which really annoys any user. Opera Mini 6 solves all of these memory problems and even loads pages faster than my phones built in browser.

Facebook 2 Update Chat For Blackberry

After waiting ages for Facebook to include Chat inside their Blackberry App, today’s update finally gave that features to us. Today’s update also came with another  pleasant surprise like a new user interface. The new user interface includes a new navigation grid where you can access all the features available to the app.

I’ve been using Facebook a lot lately after the Skype integration. Its probably the smartest thing Facebook has done, by getting the best technology for making video and voice calls.  Being able to chat with your contacts is one of Facebook’s best feature and having that in your Blackberry makes the Facebook a complete mobile app.

Battery Booster PRO For Blackberry

Its not often we got a truly useful software for the Blackberry. Battery Booster PRO stands for being well designed and actually doing what it claims to do really well. The technology behind Battery Booster PRO is very simple it aims to lower the battery consumption of your Blackberry by providing you options to manage what your phone is doing. The following are the options available in one screen using Blackberry Booster PRO.

1. Manage Connections – This options allows you to choose connection to turn on and off. I notice if I switch off WIFI I can greatly extent the amount of time left I have with my battery.

3. Monitor Process – This option is simply something I can’t live without, since it really works magic for saving energy. When your opening lots of apps in your Blackberry your consuming processing power and a lot of battery. This options tells you to turn off apps that’s still running in the background and is not being used. I often forget to turn of my Blackberry’s camera this option tells me to closed it. You can also choose what apps you want monitored.

4. Display Manager – This option is a shortcut to manage the brightness and display timeout of your screen. Its still useful and saves you from going through system settings.

5. Battery Alert – This functions as a reminder to tell you to charge your battery.

The combination of these five options insider Battery Booster PRO will increase the amount of time you have with your Blackberry. I notice my Blackberry Torch can last through the whole day instead of running out of battery in the afternoon. Battery Booster PRO has been the main battery reason for the increase of available time I get with my phone, and what makes even special is ite free. You can get this free App in App World.

Blackberry OS 7 RIM

In the past few months RIM has gotten a lot of negative press online and offline. Most of it started when RIM announced their Quarterly earnings which was something to be expected when a company’s making major transitions.

Most of the negative press against RIM centered mostly from a North American perspective. But in my travels to Asia I saw a whole new outlook on how people see Blackberry Phones and the company that makes it.

The moment I arrived in Jakarta last week I saw a huge crowd with Blackberry phones and iPhones. I did see some Android phones but not a lot even when I had to go to six different offices, Blackberry users  clearly stood out with their Curve, Bold and a few Torch. If RIM was able to capture such market it still must be doing something right contrary to all negative stories.

My visit to Jakarta actually confirms this blog’s stats which has a high number of new visits coming from Indonesia, India and the Philippines. Asia is going strong and RIM clearly knows how to get their phones to new markets.

Seeing how RIM was doing on the other side of the world has totally changed my view on RIM as a company.  RIM products are globally recognized for its quality and design. Android might look strong but handset prices are still too expensive and the ones that are priced correctly lack quality and are from older versions of Android.

I’m still excited about Blackberry OS 7 and the new phones comming out. I know there’s going to be critics, as much as I know there’s going to be tons of new Blackberry users around the world.

InstaPhoto for Blackberry

"Blackberry Applications" love photography and consider it my greatest temptation to getting another phone other than a Blackberry.

Mobile phone photography is a big market and currently has only one big player. You have the market leader Apple pushing the boundaries on how good a camera phone should be.

By making the IPhone’s camera a major factor on its success it has captured a huge number of fans. But It also helps that Apple has tons of app developers ready to take advantage to new technology.

Going back to the Blackberry things has been quiet for a few months for any photo related app. But lately things are starting to change. I’m happy to finally say the Blackberry now has a great photo filter app.InstaPhoto is a paid filter app you can get inside Blackberry App World. It contains 26 great filters you can use to make your photos look unique.

Here’s a screenshot with all the filters with a Photo I took inside our local dvd shop.

InstaPhoto does not produce the pictures of the fly but renders the picture from the filters available with the app. It does take its time when it renders your pictures but it all depends on the filter you have chosen. Picking the Polaroid filter only takes seconds to render compared to picking the postcard filter. How long it takes to produce an edited picture is no big deal and will not really slow you down.

InstaPhoto also has some photo sharing features to upload your pictures in Twitter and Facebook. I do find it a little bit creepy to see other peoples tweets and see their pictures inside InstaPhoto’s home screen. But Its a great chance to see some great results people have gotten using InstaPhoto.

Final Verdict:

I highly recommend InstaPhoto I usually go all freeware when it comes to apps but InstaPhoto has brought some life to my Blackberry’s camera which I now use more often.
Free Alternative:

There are some great online filter apps that is compatible with the Blackberry. You just need to find one that does not use flash. Here’s my favorite one called Dumpr it works great with my Blackberry browser.

What RIM Can Learn from HP Touchpad $99 Sale

I’m a big Blackberry Playbook user since it came out but I also have love tablet computing in general and follow it consistently.

Its been a week since HP announced its planning to get away from the computer business and is axing BWebOS. I felt really sad when I heard this news since I’m a big fan of Palm, the original creators of WebOS. I think HP has no idea what they’re letting go and seems illogical to quit when they’ve spent so much effort already.

I still don’t know what HP is planning with WebOS, but something interesting happened this weekend and that was a firesale on the HP Touchpad. If you haven’t seen the Touchpad its a WebOS tablet with a beautiful 9.7 inch screen and comes with a browser that can run flash. Some compare the Touchpad as very similar to the Ipad minus a little speed and the collection of apps.

In the past two days the HP Touchpad has had a surge in sales and is the number 1 selling tablet in the market beating the Apple Ipad. Its currently trending top 10 in Google trends and is the most popular tablet in most online and offline retailers. What makes its rise was a simple change in price from $399 to $99 for the 16GB model.Although HP is loosing money for every Touchpad being sold, the price drop has some unexpected results like more users using WebOS and I’m sure something they never thought possible beat the iPad in sales .

The lost of WebOS is sad but maybe RIM and other manufactures can learn from this.

1. Brand and Price comes first.
2. Apps are important but not that important.

I think in table market it should be okay to loose money on a first generation device as long as you can get as many users as you can. Manufacturers should find ways to make money other than selling the hardware like in the case of RIM use Blackberry Messenger a central feature of the Playbook and charge for premium services like high quality VOIP or HD video calling.

The tablet market is growing worldwide I don’t think the Playbook needs to be beat the iPad or the Android to survive. But making the Playbook cheaper certainly would help getting more apps for QNX and pave the way for more apps for future Blackberry phones.

5 must have free BlackBerry downloads

I was just thinking about the applications that I use most frequently on my BlackBerry and what I realized was that with the exception of the address book, the majority of them are free downloads.

That has prompted me to write this post and share with you what I believe to be 5 must have free BlackBerry downloads:

1. BlackBerry Messenger — I am not going to tell you that BlackBerry Messenger is the best Free IM client for the BlackBerry, but, I am going to tell you that it is a must have free BlackBerry download because all BlackBerry users can use it.

2. Google Maps — Google Maps is a nifty little app that allows you to easily search for businesses and get directions to and from, show you the location on a map, and even give you a satellite picture of the area. If you are looking for a Pizza parlor you could search for pizza with your zip code and all the matching results will be returned in an easy to navigate interface. One of the really cool features is that you can call the the business you searched for right from the Google Maps application.

3. BlackBerry Push Weather — This is a neat little application that I really don’t even think about, however, get useful information from it everyday. BlackBerry Push Weather is exactly what it sounds like… an application that gets weather updates pushed directly onto your device. You can have weather updates sent to you as a message or have a browser channel appear on your homepage. You can download BlackBerry Push Weather directly to your BlackBerry by visiting http://mobile.blackberry.com/mss/category_push from you devices browser.

4. Spider Solitaire — This is a free Solitaire game that can be found on the free game download area of the mobile.blackberry.com site provided by Magmic, Inc. Personally, this game has been the cause of countless hours of lost productivity

5. Yahoo! Messenger for BlackBerry and Google Talk for BlackBerry — I know that these are really two applications so just think of one of them as a bonus. Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk are both free instant messaging clients for the BlackBerry. Both BlackBerry clients have the ability to communicate with both desktop versions of these applications and other BlackBerry versions seamlessly. I know that not everyone uses these clients, but if you do, they are definitely must haves.

This wraps up my list of 5 must have free blackberry downloads, however, I am sure that there are others that should be on the list. If you know of a good free BlackBerry download feel free to let us know in the comments.
