Car Finder is a nice little handy application for your BlackBerry that actually helps you locate your vehicle.  So how does it work?  Easily.  When exiting your car, just open Car Finder and set your coordinates.  The application will save those coordinates for later on when u open it up again and choose to find your car.  It’s a simple application, nothing crazy that’ll find your car over many others.  The only downside I can think about this application is that if people forget where their cars are all the time, how will they even remember to set their coordinates every time they park?  Who knows!  Download this application directly from your phone here or just type “http://mobile.blackberry.com” manually into your phone browser

Netflix mobile access to your movie wish list available for BlackBerry phones

There are many Netflix users out there, making it a higher demand for mobile access to your movie wish list (queue).  Still in BETA, SmartFlicks is available for BlackBerry phones at the moment providing you with all your Netflix access via mobile.  You can add all your DVDs into your queue on the go without having to go through the whole website on an actual PC.  The whole Netflix library is available for viewing and review by YOU movie viewers. 

Entertainment news and information are available to see what’s hot and what’s not.  Lookinf for “coming soon” films and what the current movie times are? SmartFlicks will provide that as well.  In addition to that, it will give you GPS enabled directions to the theaters you want to see your movie in.  On Pyxis Mobile‘s website, they show an “interesting technical fact” stating:  ”this application was designed and delivered by a cross-functional team in under 24 hours with no coding and no compilation. It makes use of data from multiple data sources, and highlights a number of Pyxis Mobile 6.1 features including exploding rows, font control, in-line images, and graphical navigation.”

Pinger great voice messaging application for mobile professionals

Pinger  is a great application for mobile professionals that rely on voice messaging or would prefer using it on the go.  How does it work?  It’s simple.  Call your “Pinger send number” (which is sent to you upon activating your free account) then the computer lady says “who do you want to message.”  Just say a name and you’ll be connected to the person instantly.  Now, Pinger no longer requires new users to sign up for the Pinger service to begin receiving voice messages on their mobile phones. Instead, Pinger members can send Pinger voice messages to new users, directly to their mobile phone, even if the intended recipient is not a Pinger member. Recipients receive a text message prompting them to click and call a local phone number to instantly hear the Pinger voice message with no annoying prompts or lengthy greetings.

Want to look cool in front of your BlackBerry friends?  Well you can make an attempt by using some symbols that aren’t stock on the BlackBerry keyboard or symbols menu.  Simply copy and paste these symbols below to your notepad and use them as you’d like to.  The first one is actually a BlackBerry symbol which will not appear as one via PC/Mac.  On your BlackBerry Browser, you’ll see that it is clearly a BB logo with 4 “dots” to it.  So go ahead and select all these, and copy and paste them to your BlackBerry.  Enjoy.

New BlackBerry Messenger symbols and emoticons

Special thanks to our contributing author Ryan for sending this one in!  It looks like there are more exclusive emoticons you can use on your BlackBerry now, but not freely everywhere.  These can only be seen via BlackBerry Messenger.  Upon waking up today, I was chatting with Ryan on BBM and all I could ask in my head was “great scott, what are all these tacky symbols and emoticons on your user name?”  Kindly, he sent them all to me and I am now overwhelmed with BlackBerry Messenger emoticons that I haven’t ever seen before.  Where’d these come from? Who discovered them to begin with? Whoever it was, thanks for passing it right along!  Above is some of the symbols, but they couldn’t all fit in one screenshot, so you’ll have to try them out yourselves!  Before you panick, the emoticons aren’t going to come up as the images you expect when copying them.  When pasting them into BBM, you’ll be able to see them all.  Hit the jump to copy and past them all today.

BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) Music major new feature good time to highlight

RIM's PR department must be feeling rather persecuted right now. The launch of its long awaited BlackBerry 7 generation of handsets was overshadowed by Googorola and the HP bombshell, now, when it's trying to bring attention to a major new feature, Steve Jobs goes and hangs his hat up.

The feature in question is BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) Music, and RIM describes is as a "...cloud-based service that enables social and viral music discovery by allowing users to build an evolving, community-based music library that is shared amongst their BBM Music friends." Given the undesirable press BBM received during the recent riots, this is a good time to highlight its benign uses.

Here's how it works: you build up a music profile of 50 tracks, 25 of which can be replaced in any given month, and then invite friends to subscribe to that profile, whereupon you can then access each other's tracks. You can then, in theory, have access to limitless music, depending on how many friend you have and how diverse their music tastes are.

You can listen to the entire tracks, not just previews, and do things like make playlists, shuffle, and indulge in social activities, such as telling your mates how rubbish their music tastes are, and you can see how many of them are listening to your tracks. Music can even be saved to devices to enable off-line listening.

"More than 45 million customers already love the social communication benefits delivered through BBM and we are thrilled to be extending the experience into a uniquely social and interactive music service," said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-CEO at RIM. "We have partnered with leading music companies to provide a ‘full track' music sharing and discovery experience that will provide users with quality music on demand and allow them to connect with friends on a whole new level."

The service seems to have the approval of all the major music labels, and is powered by cloud music provider Omniphone. A closed beta commences today in the UK, US and Canada, and the service will probably cost a subscription of a fiver a month when it hard-launches. BlackBerry App World 3.0 Experience Games and Themes

RIM got the memo that people want a nice lot of apps on their smartphones earlier this year when it grudgingly offered people the ‘tonnage of apps' they seem to need by making Android apps compatible with the BlackBerry PlayBook platform, which will also begin to appear in its smartphones next year.

"There's no compromise here. You've got the tonnage of apps. And you've got the performance," said co-CEO Jim Balsilie, at the time. "Do I think the tonnage is overplayed? Yes. But if you think it's about having a couple hundred thousand apps, there you go."

There's clearly some corporate resentment that BlackBerry is being stigmatised by having so many fewer apps available than competing platforms such as iOS and Android. And there's some validity to that argument; the vast majority of app use is represented by the top 100 apps, and the thousands of other ones are used by relatively few people. Nonetheless users are reassured weight of numbers.

Since it's unlikely BlackBerry is ever going to attract the number of third-party developers of the big two, it makes sense for RIM to concentrate on what it can control - the look and feel of the app store experience on its devices.

So we had the announcement of the third version of BlackBerry App World today, with the claim that it makes discovering and downloading apps, games, and themes easier than ever. It will be delivered over the air to users of BlackBerry 5.0 and above in the next few days. Here are the new features, according to RIM, and they include some novel ideas, such as social app sharing.

• Sleek New Design - The BlackBerry App World experience has been enhanced to help users discover the latest and greatest apps and content, starting right on the BlackBerry App World home screen where rotating spotlight banners show off all that's new and exciting.
• New Channels - Apps, Games, and Themes now have their own channels so users can get to what they want even faster.
• Introduction of My Account - My Account makes managing BBID and payment options easy with direct access to all account information from the home screen.
• New My World Features - My World gives users a streamlined view of their apps and status, and now at a glance, in addition to seeing which apps are installed and uninstalled, users can manage subscription content and services. When new updates or subscription renewals are available for apps, users will be notified using push technology.
• App Social Sharing - When a user finds an app they can't live without, they can share it directly from the app details screen through BBM, Facebook, Twitter, email and SMS.
• Evolved App Details Screen - At a glance, users can get a quick summary, check out reviews and star ratings, take a look at screen shots, and more.
• More Search Options - Quickly find apps with a Search Bar now appearing on the storefront home screen and search results are presented across Channels as well as My World. Search Bars are also within each Channel and users have the ability to filter by App Name, Price, Rating, Newest, Best Match, or Popular.

Virtual Contact for Twitter Free BB PlayBook Application

Virtual Contact for Twitter for the PlayBook  proposes sizable advantages for serious Twitter users. I have been using Virtual Contact now for a few days and have yet to be disappointed. I am surprised that all the features I have needed are there and easy to access. You can do two kinds of searches: a direct search with the “Show User” button if you know the exact username of the individual you’re looking for, or a search through keywords with the “Search User” button. I also really like the multiple Twitter account capability.

Future updates for this application???  I would recommend changing the color scheme or allow the user to change colors by adding different themes. The base colors as you can see above are not bad, but I would like a little flexibility in future updates.

BlackBerry Travel App Now With All Relevant Hotel Details

It just a week-and-a-bit before I arrive into San Francisco for the BlackBerry DevCon event. I’m in Houston first, followed by New York, before flying into the Valley. So that means I’ve been doing the usual jiggery-pokery with hotels and flights. In many cases, I’ve been lucky enough to have a colleague or agency take part of some of the scheduling and booking. In other cases, I’ve sorted it out myself.

Mid-way through I thought I should really try out BlackBerry Travel properly. I’ve had a wee look previously but I’ve not really had the opportunity to use it in anger since the new Bold 9900 arrived.

It was about time.

BlackBerry Travel is a key offering on the platform — just like Facebook and Twitter. It’s a ‘super-app’ — that is, it makes full use of the device capabilities including calendar and messaging integration.

And it’s magic!

Perhaps the most challenging element of business travel nowadays is juggling everything and having the right information at your fingertips, *all* of the time. My schedule next week is a good example. I’m on 6 different flights, 4 different hotels, 3 cities. Trying to keep all the booking numbers and timings in order gets challenging. You end up having to print stuff out and place it in chronological order just to make sense of it all. Not any more.

Once activated on your phone (and entirely free of charge), BlackBerry Travel scans your inbox. The moment it comes across a booking record email — or any of those long complicated corporate travel confirmation emails, it springs into action. It’s really fast. The app parses the email and extracts all the relevant bits and builds a trip for you.

Now, I knew this. I’m sure I’ve actually had a briefing on this too. But seeing it in the flesh, using it in anger? Amazing.

The first part of my upcoming journey to be confirmed by email were the outbound flights. The email arrived and almost simultaneously, I received a prompt in my inbox from BlackBerry Travel telling me that it had added them.

I clicked through. And, I’m delighted to say I was stunned. Boom! There was the flight schedule and ticketing information organised beautifully. The app then pointed out that although I was due to arrive into Houston on the 10th, I didn’t have any accommodation arranged. Would I like some help with that, asked the app?

Geez! Yes. I clicked. Boom! Again! All of a sudden I saw a list of available hotels along with prices in my local currency. Unfortunately I couldn’t book them as that was being done for me via another email.

When that booking was made — woosh — the BlackBerry Travel app was updated immediately, now with all the relevant hotel details.

Simply phenomenal.

Plus, my device calendar now has the various flight details programmed in. Excellent.

My week has continued like this. As another booking is and received by my email, it’s automatically integrated. So now I have a beautiful itinerary on my phone. Hugely, hugely valuable.

I’ve hooked it up to LinkedIn so it helpfully tells me who amongst my network is nearby at the particular locations in my itinerary. Yelp is also directly integrated too so finding restaurants and the like is that bit easier.

Plus, weather is integrated as well. Useful, because it looks like it’s going to be rather hot in Houston.

I’m seriously impressed.

You’ll no doubt have seen similar from the likes of TripIt (which I also use) however the super-tight and seamless integration with BlackBerry Travel is nothing short of astounding. When I think of the amount of hassle I’ve had to go through in the past writing all this stuff down or printing sheet-after-sheet and placing it all into a special plastic cover.. I’m simply delighted with the app.

If you’re a BlackBerry user and you travel regularly, I strongly recommend taking a look and trying it out.

Keepass for Blackberry Security Freeware

Keepass is an open source password manager that runs in windows and also several mobile devices. I’m happy to say Blackberry is one of them. Keepass uses AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) this is the standard of encryption chosen by the American National Institute of Standards and Technology (Government Agency). It currently use 128bit encryption, which I is sufficient to protect sensitive information inside your phone.

Since the addition of the Blackberry version you can just encode information using the windows version of keepass and keep another copy inside your phone. With the keepass explorer you just which database you want to open SD card or phone memory.

I’m a firm believer of having several passwords, keeping track off all of them is hard but having keepass around solves that problem.

We have mentioned KeePass for BlackBerry a few times in the past year as a free alternative for storing passwords and sensitive information on your Berry. It even syncs with the KeyPass desktop client.
