BlackBerry Cloud Drive Services From Google

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion has reached a treat to purchase Ireland's NewBay, a provider of photo, video, and social-network collection for smartphones and computers, the BlackBerry creator mentioned on Friday.

RIM has been slow to bolt on to such calm as an item to help sell its smartphones and inscription computers, that have been geared more to corporate users than to consumers.

RIM did not divulge conditions of the deal, that has nonetheless to close, but it mentioned it was not financially element to the Canadian smartphone maker. Media and researcher reports put the cost it paid is to Dublin-based firm at $100 million.

NewBay has more than 80 million subscribers for its "white-label" calm services around deals with network operators inclusive Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, ATT and Verizon. "White label" means that users see the operator's brand on the content, not NewBay's.

The firm stores media on its own servers and delivers it to any Internet-connected device, inclusive mobile phones, personal computers, tablets and televisions.

Analyst Mike Abramsky at RBC Capital Markets mentioned RIM will expected use NewBay's Internet-based print and video albums, residence books, calendars and other services as a bottom on that it will erect up its calm offerings.

"RIM is forthcoming after that to marketplace than aggressive offerings" from Apple's iCloud, Amazon.com's Cloud Drive and services from Google, he said. "It's not well known nonetheless either RIM's gift will tie in or loiter the calm and user experience of competitors."
